A productive day starts the night before. The choices you make in the evening can set you up for success the next day, or hold you back from reaching your goals. Whether you’re looking to excel in your work, spend more time on your hobbies, or even improve your relationships, you can orient yourself towards a successful day by making these choices tonight.

Eat the Right Dinner

Have dinner at least three hours before you go to bed. Eat a balanced meal of complex carbohydrates, protein, and healthy fats. Dinner should be your smallest meal of the day. All of this will promote good digestion, help to fend off weight gain, and prevent nighttime issues like heartburn. Making a good meal choice sets you up to continue the trend of healthy decisions the next day, and we all know how important a healthy diet is for both productivity and overall health.

Lay Out Clothes

Don’t stumble around in the dark after your alarm goes off and try to throw together something to wear for the day. Pick out an outfit the night before. If needed, iron or press it now so you won’t be pressed for time later. You’ll look more put together, and you won’t run the risk of a wardrobe malfunction or mismatched outfit.

Turn Off the Screen

Research has shown that the blue light emitted by most electronic screens interferes with our bodies’ circadian rhythms, making it more difficult for us to fall asleep. Turn off the TV and put away your phone for an hour before you go to bed. If you work online, get your work done before this time. You shouldn’t be working right before bed anyway, as you’re more likely to be tired and less productive. If you enjoy reading a book before bed, opt for a print copy rather than an E-reader. And stay away from Facebook and other social media– these outlets are significant time-wasters and could have you enthralled for hours after bedtime.

Make a Plan

What is one thing that you want to accomplish tomorrow? Write it down, or make a mental note of it. It doesn’t have to be anything groundbreaking– big things are done one step at a time. Your goal can be something simple, like answering all of your emails before lunch or waking up early enough to get a good breakfast. Once you’ve accomplished your goal, give yourself a small reward like a fifteen minute break or a small contribution to a savings account for something you want to buy. Positive reinforcement helps to keep you moving forward.

Take some time tonight to prepare for your tomorrow. Making sure you d the right things today can ensure a much more productive, enjoyable week.
