Flexible schedule jobs

If you thought that your only options when it comes to a job are either to just work in an office or just work from home, think again. Flexible schedule jobs bridge the gap between the office and the home office, providing many styles of working options that can help make work-life balance a reality.

The FlexJobs article “30 Companies Hiring for Flexible Schedule Jobs in 2017” shows that more and more employers are truly embracing workplace flexibility—and with good reason. Almost three-quarters (73%) of respondents in a separate FlexJobs poll reported wanting flexible work options, making it the second-most popular way to work right after full-time telecommuting, which ranked at 86%.

But it’s important to first understand what a flexible schedule job actually is. There are, in fact, six different types of flexible schedule jobs:

Completely Flexible Schedule

A totally flexible schedule allows you to set your desired working hours. If you want to work from 9:00 a.m.-5:00 p.m. (or vice versa), you can.

Alternative Schedule

With an alternative schedule job, you’ll work outside of the traditional 9-to-5 working hours. These hours might be set by your employer, by you, or both.

Compressed Workweek

Usually done at the workplace, a compressed workweek means you’ll work a standard 40-hour workweek, but in four days instead of five. (Think working 10-hour days Monday-Thursday and having Friday free.)

Results Only Work Environment (ROWE)

With ROWE, it doesn’t matter where you work or when you work, so long as you get the job done. Being able to get the job done well and on schedule matters, not how many hours you clock at your desk.

Split Shift

If you have a split shift job, you will work two blocks of hours, but have a long break in between. For example, you might work 8:00 a.m.-1:00 p.m., and then again from 7:00 p.m.-9:00 p.m.

Flex Time

A flex time schedule means that you can start or end your day earlier or later as need be, but you will work a consistent number of hours. Companies sometimes offer this as a way to avoid having their employees stuck in rush hour traffic commuting to and from the office.

The 10 companies listed below (and the 20 others that made the FlexJobs list) all offer flexible schedule jobs. The list is comprised from a thorough analysis of the 40,000+ jobs in the FlexJobs database from the first five months of the calendar year 2017 (January 1 through May 31). By allowing their workers to have flexible schedule jobs, these companies are giving workers greater autonomy over their schedules and, in turn, creating a healthier, more productive workforce.
